Sand Tonnage & Unit Converter

Convert sand quantities between tonnes, short tons, long tons, cubic metres, cubic yards, cubic feet, litres, and gallons — with automatic density adjustment for 10 sand and aggregate types.

The sand tonnage and unit converter is a dedicated tool for translating sand and aggregate quantities between the weight and volume units used across different countries and industries. UK suppliers quote in metric tonnes. US suppliers quote in short tons. Australian specifications use cubic metres. US concrete batching uses cubic yards. This converter handles all combinations, automatically applying the correct bulk density for the selected material — from dry sand to wet sand, concrete aggregate to topsoil. It outputs all units simultaneously in a single conversion step.

Why Use a Dedicated Sand Unit Converter?

Unit confusion between metric tonnes, US short tons, and cubic yards causes expensive ordering errors on international and multi-supplier projects. There are 5 common conversion scenarios this tool solves:

  1. UK-US supplier differences — a UK invoice in metric tonnes must be compared to a US bid in short tons; 1 metric tonne = 1.102 short tons, so a 100-tonne order equals 110.2 short tons.
  2. Blueprint to delivery translation — engineering drawings specify sand in cubic metres; bulk delivery quotes are in tonnes; the converter bridges the gap instantly.
  3. Bag-to-bulk cost comparison — the converter shows how many 25 kg bags equal 1 tonne, making it easy to compare bag pricing vs bulk delivery pricing.
  4. International project coordination — Middle East projects use metric tonnes; Australian projects use cubic metres; UK uses tonnes; Canada uses cubic metres; this tool handles all markets.
  5. Concrete batching accuracy — concrete mix designs specify fine aggregate (sand) in kg per m³ of concrete; the converter translates design quantities to delivery truck loads in cubic yards.

Complete Unit Conversion Reference for Sand

Weight conversions: 1 metric tonne = 1,000 kg = 2,204.6 lbs = 1.102 short tons = 0.984 long tons. Volume conversions: 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 264.2 US gallons = 35.31 ft³ = 1.308 yd³. Weight-to-volume (dry sand at 1,600 kg/m³): 1 tonne = 0.625 m³ = 0.817 yd³ = 22.1 ft³. Weight-to-volume (wet sand at 1,920 kg/m³): 1 tonne = 0.521 m³ = 0.681 yd³ = 18.4 ft³.

How Many Short Tons Is a Metric Tonne of Sand?

1 metric tonne = 1.10231 US short tons. For ordering purposes: if a project calls for 50 metric tonnes of dry sand and your US supplier quotes in short tons, you need 50 × 1.10231 = 55.12 short tons. Conversely, if a US supplier quotes 50 short tons, that equals 45.36 metric tonnes (45,359 kg). The UK long ton (used in older British engineering documents) = 1.016 metric tonnes — close to a metric tonne but 1.6% heavier.

Tonnes to Cubic Yards: The Most Common Conversion

The tonnes-to-cubic-yards conversion is the most frequently needed calculation in US civil engineering and landscaping. Formula: Cubic yards = (Tonnes × 1,000) ÷ Density (kg/m³) × 1.30795. For 10 metric tonnes of dry sand (1,600 kg/m³): cubic yards = (10,000 ÷ 1,600) × 1.308 = 6.25 × 1.308 = 8.175 cubic yards. For 10 US short tons: convert to kg first (10 × 907.2 = 9,072 kg), then: cubic yards = (9,072 ÷ 1,600) × 1.308 = 7.42 cubic yards.

Sand Tonnage & Unit Converter FAQs

Quick answers to the most common sand unit conversion questions — tonnes to cubic metres, short tons to cubic yards, and more.

1 metric tonne of dry sand (1,600 kg/m³) = 0.625 m³. 1 metric tonne of wet sand (1,920 kg/m³) = 0.521 m³. 1 metric tonne of fill sand (1,750 kg/m³) = 0.571 m³. Use the appropriate density for the sand condition being ordered.

1 US short ton (2,000 lbs / 907.2 kg) of dry sand (1,600 kg/m³): volume = 907.2 ÷ 1,600 = 0.567 m³ = 0.741 cubic yards. So 1 short ton of dry sand ≈ 0.74 cubic yards. For 5 short tons: 5 × 0.741 = 3.71 cubic yards.

A metric tonne = 1,000 kg = 2,204.6 lbs. A US short ton = 2,000 lbs = 907.2 kg. A metric tonne is 10.2% heavier than a short ton. If a UK supplier quotes £30 per tonne and a US supplier quotes $35 per short ton, you need to convert both to the same unit before comparing costs.

Multiply cubic yards by 0.7646 to convert to m³, then multiply by the density in t/m³. For 5 cubic yards of dry sand: 5 × 0.7646 = 3.823 m³. 3.823 × 1.6 t/m³ = 6.12 metric tonnes. In short tons: 6.12 × 1.102 = 6.74 short tons.

25 kg bags: 1,000 ÷ 25 = 40 bags per tonne. 20 kg bags: 1,000 ÷ 20 = 50 bags per tonne. 50 lb (22.7 kg) bags: 1,000 ÷ 22.7 = 44 bags per tonne. 50 kg bags: 1,000 ÷ 50 = 20 bags per tonne. Bulk bags (850–1,000 kg): approximately 1 bulk bag per metric tonne.

1 metric tonne of dry sand (density 1,600 kg/m³) = 625 litres. 1 metric tonne of wet sand (1,920 kg/m³) = 521 litres. There are 1,000 litres in 1 cubic metre. To convert: tonnes ÷ density (t/m³) × 1,000 = litres.

A long ton (also called an imperial ton or gross ton) = 2,240 lbs = 1,016.05 kg. It was the standard unit of mass in the UK before metrication and is still used in some UK shipping and coal industry contexts. Most modern UK construction and landscaping sand is quoted in metric tonnes (1,000 kg). Long tons are rarely seen in new construction specifications.
