Pool Sand Calculator

Calculate the exact amount of pool filter sand, pool base sand, or backfill sand needed for above-ground pools, in-ground pools, and sand filter systems — in kg, tonnes, and bags.

The pool sand calculator estimates 3 types of sand used in swimming pool installations: filter media sand for pool sand filters, cushion sand for the base layer under above-ground pool liners, and fill sand for in-ground pool shell backfill. Pool filter sand (grade 16/30 or 20/40 silica sand) has a particle size of 0.45–0.85 mm and a bulk density of 1,440–1,520 kg/m³. Pool base cushion sand (masonry sand or fine washed sand) is spread 50–100 mm deep under the pool liner to protect against punctures and provide a comfortable footing. In-ground pool backfill uses fill sand at 1,750 kg/m³ compacted around the pool shell.

Why Use a Pool Sand Calculator?

Sand quantities for pool projects are consistently underestimated — the wrong amount of filter sand affects filtration efficiency, and too little base sand allows liner damage. There are 5 reasons to calculate precisely:

  1. Filter performance — sand filters require sand to within 2–4 inches of the top of the filter tank; too little sand means unfiltered water bypasses the bed, too much restricts flow and increases backpressure.
  2. Base cushion thickness — a 50–100 mm sand base under an above-ground pool liner prevents pebble punctures; the calculator converts pool diameter to exact sand volume and bag count.
  3. Backfill volume — in-ground pool shells require compacted fill sand around the outside walls; underestimating this leads to mid-project material shortages.
  4. Cost planning — filter sand costs $1.50–$3.00/kg in bags vs $0.50–$0.80/kg in bulk; the calculator shows both bag and bulk quantities to compare costs.
  5. Filter sizing — the calculator cross-checks your pool volume against the filter sand manufacturer's recommended sand weight to confirm the filter is sized correctly.

How Much Filter Sand Does a Pool Filter Need?

Pool filter sand quantity is specified by the filter tank diameter and model — the manufacturer states the sand weight in kilograms or pounds. A 24-inch (610 mm) sand filter tank typically requires 200 lbs (91 kg) of #20 silica filter sand. A 30-inch (760 mm) filter tank requires approximately 350 lbs (159 kg). A 36-inch (915 mm) tank requires approximately 600 lbs (272 kg). Always check your filter manual's specification — overfilling a filter tank is the most common installation mistake and causes channeling.

How Much Sand Do I Need Under an Above-Ground Pool?

For a circular above-ground pool, the base sand area = π × radius². For a 15 ft (4.57 m) diameter pool: area = 3.14159 × (2.285)² = 16.4 m². At a 75 mm (3 in) base depth: volume = 16.4 × 0.075 = 1.23 m³. At dry sand density of 1,600 kg/m³: weight = 1,968 kg ≈ 2 tonnes. At 25 kg per bag, that is approximately 79 bags of sand. Spread and level the sand before placing the pool pad and liner — never place the pool directly on rough ground.

Can I Use Play Sand Instead of Pool Filter Sand?

No. Pool filter sand (also called silica sand or quartz sand) is specifically graded to 0.45–0.85 mm particle size to trap debris while allowing water to flow freely. Play sand has fine irregular particles that compact too densely, create channeling paths, and push through the lateral return ports into the pool. Always use #20 silica sand rated for swimming pool filters. For the base layer under the pool liner, fine washed masonry sand or purpose-made pool base sand (also called sand cove material) are both suitable — but not filter sand, which is too coarse for comfortable barefoot walking.

Pool Sand FAQs

Common questions about sand quantities, types, and placement for above-ground pools, in-ground pools, and sand filter systems.

Check your filter manufacturer's specification — most 24-inch tanks need 100 kg (200 lbs), 30-inch tanks need 150–160 kg (325–350 lbs), and 36-inch tanks need 250–275 kg (550–600 lbs). Fill the filter to within 4–6 inches of the top of the tank, not to the brim.

Fine washed masonry sand (soft sand / building sand) is used as the base layer under above-ground pool liners. It should be screeded flat, slightly mounded in the centre (creating a 'cove') for drainage, and free of rocks, roots, and sharp objects. Some pool installers use Gorilla Pad foam instead of sand.

The sand base under an above-ground pool should be 2–3 inches (50–75 mm) deep at the minimum. For pools on rough or rocky ground, 4 inches (100 mm) is recommended. Some pool installers create a sand cove (concave mound) rising 6 inches up the pool wall perimeter to support the liner base.

Pool filter sand should be replaced every 5–7 years under normal residential use. Signs that sand needs replacing include: sand in the pool (cracked laterals), cloudy water that does not clear after backwashing, and significantly reduced flow rate. Some pool owners switch to ZeoSand or glass filter media at replacement time.

A 15 ft (4.57 m) diameter above-ground pool requires approximately 1.2–1.5 m³ of base sand. At 25 kg per bag and dry sand density of 1,600 kg/m³, that equals 77–96 bags. Ordering 80–100 bags is typical. For a 3-inch base, plan on 80 bags; for a 4-inch base, plan on 106 bags.

Pool filter sand (#20 silica, 0.45–0.85 mm) is washed, graded, and tested for turbidity and angular particle count. Regular building or play sand has inconsistent particle sizes, higher clay and silt content, and will clog a pool filter or pass through the laterals into the pool. Always use filter-grade #20 silica sand in pool filter tanks.

In-ground pool backfill volume = total excavation volume minus pool shell volume. For a 9 m × 4.5 m pool excavated 2 m deep: excavation = 81 m³. Pool shell volume (walls 200 mm thick) ≈ 15 m³. Backfill needed = 81 − 15 = 66 m³. At fill sand density of 1,750 kg/m³ with 15% compaction factor: order approximately 70 m³ (122 tonnes) of fill sand.
